SAGE BIGEC 2022 Short Course 1: Basin Analysis: An Integrated Approach to Structural Styles and Petroleum Systems

Instructors: Dr. Awad Bilal and Dr. Essam Saeid (Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Benghazi, Benghazi, Libya)

Date & Time: 12:00–4:00, 01 September

Cost: 30 LYD

Location: TBA

Course Overview

This course covers the basic theoretical background and practical skills required for structural, sedimentary and stratigraphic interpretation of sedimentary basins in different tectonic regimes. An important aspect of the course is developing an integrated approach of the structural styles, 2D/3D seismic expression and the petroleum systems of sedimentary basins with the main focus on the extensional and contractional regimes basins. The course also aims to provide the basic geoscience background needed by anyone engaged in the study of sedimentary basin evolution and their stratigraphic fill. Therefore, it firstly reviews the main types of sedimentary basin in a plate tectonic framework and the controls on basin infill. Secondly, an overview of 2D/3D seismic analysis of basin-forming structures including the recognition and use of syn-kinematic (growth) strata in understanding the evolution of structures is covered. The main tectonic phases of basin evolution and their influence on the petroleum systems are explored. The global economic importance of rift-related basins and fold-and-thrust belts (contractional regimes) is also covered. Practical exercises are a major part of the course and using global examples of typical basin types.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for exploration geologists and geophysicists as well as the others who are involved in basin analysis and/or want to know more about seismic expression of sedimentary basins and their evolution history.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of structural geology, seismic interpretation, stratigraphy and sedimentology is required.

 Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you should be able to

  • Understand fundamentals of basin analysis and explain the main types of sedimentary basins
  • Describe and interpret the main tectonic phases in a basin history and determine the structural and stratigraphic styles
  • Explain seismic stratigraphy concepts as well as the processes of fault growth and their effect on the evolution of basin depocentre, reservoir quality and distribution.
  • Perform stratigraphic and structural interpretation of seismic data
  • Appreciate why accurate structural analysis is important for hydrocarbon exploration
  • Recognize the influence of basin evolution on the petroleum systems

Awad Bilal obtained his B.Sc. degree from University of Benghazi and M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Royal Holloway, University of London. He is currently a lecturer of structural geology and tectonics in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Benghazi. His research focuses on studying the four-dimensional evolution of extensional faults, tectono-stratigraphic evolution of rift basins, and the structure of magma plumbing systems.

Essam Saeid is a lecturer in structural geology and tectonics at the University of Benghazi Libya, where he obtained B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in earth sciences. He has a Ph.D. in geoscience from the University of South Carolina, where he worked as an adjunct assistant professor. His research specializes in tectono-stratigraphic studies of continental margins and orogenic belts, seismic interpretation, and sequence stratigraphy.  P
